Avatar (2009)
Human Dynamo Workshop supplied a large amount of props, set fixtures and detailing for the live action studio scenes for Avatar 2009, directed by James Cameron and filmed in Wellington. Supervising art director Kim Sinclair won a Bafta and an Oscar for best art direction, for creating the physical world of the film.
These pieces include the Cryo Lockers, mounted guns, torches, pilot consoles, aircraft interiors and 40 seats for a space transporter.
-
Fridges. We made three futuristic fridges required as set pieces in the 'Shack Room Site'. Or mobile out-post the central characters retreat too.
-
Pilot console and instruments for the Samson craft used in Avatar. Fabricated in the Workshop for live action filmed scenes shot at Stone Street Studios.
-
Working Torch. We had to design and prototype a working torch light that looked like it belonged in the future on Pandora.
-
Mounted Gun. This prop was used in a scene near the end of the movie. it was mounted onto a flying craft and matching one used by the commander. It is demonstrated here by Rob Uivel. This particular job had a very tight deadline. It was only when James Cameron walked on the set for filming that he asked "Where is the other gun?".
-
In the beginning of the movie the crew wake from cryo sleep and retrieve belongings from these lockers while in a weightless state. These were made in the Human Dynamo Workshop and installed on set at Stone Street Miramar.
-
Troop Transportation Seats - The HD Workshop produced 40 functional seats that lined the set of a troop space transporter. Used in a scene near the beginning of the movie. After crew have woken from cryo sleep on a large spaceship, they are transported to Pandora on a troop carrier spacecraft lined with these seats.
